GTA 6 unlocks at midnight local time on Thursday 19 November 2026, on both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games confirmed it on its support site, so wherever you live, you can start playing the moment the clock hits 00:00 on 19 November.
- Unlock time: 00:00 (midnight) local time, 19 November 2026
- Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, same rule on both
- First to play: New Zealand, then Australia and Asia, then Europe and the Americas
- Pre-load: 10 November. PS5 at midnight local time, Xbox at 00:00 GMT worldwide
- Size: up to 212 GB, depending on your console
What time does GTA 6 unlock?
Rockstar’s answer is short. Its support article on regional release times says: “Grand Theft Auto VI will release midnight local time on November 19, 2026, in all regions for both PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S.”
In practice that means the night between Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 November. If you stay up on Wednesday evening, the game opens as your clock rolls over to Thursday. There is no single worldwide launch moment, so the release travels around the globe one time zone at a time.
GTA 6 unlock time by time zone
Everyone gets the game at 00:00 on 19 November in their own time zone. The table shows when that midnight happens, measured in UK time (GMT), so you can see who plays first.
| Region | Local unlock | Same moment in UK time (GMT) |
|---|---|---|
| New Zealand (NZDT) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 11:00, Wed 18 Nov |
| Sydney, Melbourne (AEDT) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 13:00, Wed 18 Nov |
| Japan, Korea (JST/KST) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 15:00, Wed 18 Nov |
| India (IST) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 18:30, Wed 18 Nov |
| Central Europe (CET) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 23:00, Wed 18 Nov |
| UK and Ireland (GMT) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov |
| Brazil, Sao Paulo (BRT) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 03:00, Thu 19 Nov |
| US East Coast (EST) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 05:00, Thu 19 Nov |
| US West Coast (PST) | 00:00, Thu 19 Nov | 08:00, Thu 19 Nov |
Daylight saving time has already ended in Europe and North America by 19 November, so these offsets are the winter ones. New Zealand and southeast Australia are on summer time.
When does the GTA 6 pre-load start?
Pre-loading is where PS5 and Xbox differ. On PS5 the download opens at midnight local time on Tuesday 10 November, just like the launch. On Xbox it opens at the same moment everywhere: 00:00 GMT on 10 November.
| Xbox pre-load (global) | Local time |
|---|---|
| US West Coast (PST) | 16:00, Mon 9 Nov |
| US East Coast (EST) | 19:00, Mon 9 Nov |
| UK (GMT) | 00:00, Tue 10 Nov |
| Central Europe (CET) | 01:00, Tue 10 Nov |
| Sydney (AEDT) | 11:00, Tue 10 Nov |
| New Zealand (NZDT) | 13:00, Tue 10 Nov |
The pre-load needs up to 212 GB of free space, according to Rockstar. Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console in Rest Mode (PS5) or Sleep mode (Xbox) so it downloads by itself. Our GTA 6 pre-order and pre-load guide has the full steps, and the reported Xbox size is in our file size story.
Does Xbox get GTA 6 earlier than PS5?
No. Only the pre-load is global on Xbox. The game itself unlocks at midnight local time on both consoles, so a PS5 player and an Xbox player in the same city start at the same minute.
Can you play GTA 6 early with a New Zealand account?
Because New Zealand is first, some players plan to buy the game on a separate New Zealand store account and play from 11:00 GMT on 18 November. Rockstar has not said anything about this. The purchase would belong to that other account and region, not your main one.
We would not buy a second copy just to win half a day. If Rockstar or Sony and Microsoft comment on it, we will update this page.
Is the physical edition also midnight?
The boxed version is a code in a box, not a disc, on sale in shops from 12 November. You still download the game, so the same midnight local time applies once the code is redeemed. Read more in our GTA 6 release date guide and the full launch overview in everything we know about GTA 6.
