GTA 6 File Size: How Many GB You Need on PS5 and Xbox

Rockstar says up to 212 GB, but reports put Xbox at about 225 GB and the PS5 box at 230 GB. Free up at least 250 GB before the pre-load on 10 November.

GTA 6 needs up to 212 GB of free space, according to Rockstar, and PlayStation tells PS5 owners to clear “a minimum of 212GB”. Reports put the Xbox version closer to 225 GB and the PS5 box at 230 GB, so the safe move is to free up at least 250 GB before the pre-load opens on 10 November.

  • Official size: up to 212 GB, “depending on device” (Rockstar)
  • PS5: clear a minimum of 212 GB (PlayStation)
  • Xbox Series X|S (reported): about 225 GB (209.86 GiB)
  • PS5 box (reported): lists a 230 GB install
  • Pre-load: Tuesday 10 November. Launch: 19 November
  • Our advice: free up 250 GB or more

How many GB is GTA 6?

When Rockstar announced the pre-load date on 3 November, it said the game needs up to 212 GB “depending on device”. That is the only size Rockstar itself has given so far.

PlayStation repeats the number on its own GTA 6 page: “Get ready by clearing a minimum of 212GB of storage space on your PlayStation 5.” Note the word minimum. The real install can end up bigger once a launch day update is added.

The numbers that have surfaced since then are all higher than 212 GB. None of them come from Rockstar, so treat them as a guide, not a promise.

The Xbox figure comes from store data shared by the X account @Cokymoky69 and reported by RockstarIntel. The 230 GB comes from photos of the back of the PS5 case. Both stories are covered in our Xbox file size report and our story on the 230 GB box.

Not confirmed by Rockstar: the 225 GB Xbox size and the 230 GB box figure are reports, not official numbers.

Why are there different numbers?

Consoles and stores do not always count gigabytes the same way. 209.86 GiB is the same amount of data as roughly 225 GB, so part of the gap is just units. Box text is also often rounded up to leave room for updates.

RockstarIntel also reported three separate builds on both consoles: one for most of the world, one for Japan (about 1.2 GB smaller) and one for Australia and New Zealand (almost identical). Rockstar has not said why.

How much space do you need for GTA 6?

Plan for the highest number, not the official one. A launch day update will need room too, and a console that is almost full can struggle to install patches.

  1. Free up at least 250 GB on internal storage before 10 November.
  2. Check the space after the pre-load finishes, so there is room for any update on 19 November.
  3. Turn on automatic downloads and leave the console in Rest Mode (PS5) or Sleep mode (Xbox), as Rockstar recommends in its pre-load FAQ.

The original PS5 has 825 GB of storage, newer models and the Xbox Series X have around 1 TB, and only part of that is free for games. Xbox Series S models with 512 GB will be the tightest, as GTA 6 alone takes close to half the drive.

Can you play GTA 6 from an external drive?

You can store it on a USB drive, but you cannot play it from one. GTA 6 is a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S game, and both consoles require games like that to run from fast storage.

ConsolePlay fromStore only
PS5Internal SSD or an added M.2 SSD (250 GB to 8 TB)USB extended storage
Xbox Series X|SInternal SSD or a Storage Expansion CardUSB 3 external drive

Sony’s support page says it plainly: “To play your PS5 games, you need to copy game data from your USB extended storage” back to the console or an M.2 SSD. Microsoft has the same rule for games built for Xbox Series X|S. If you are short on space, moving older games to a USB drive is the quickest fix.

Will the GTA 6 file size change at launch?

Very likely. Rockstar has not announced a launch day patch or its size, and Series S has no figure of its own yet. This page will be updated at launch on 19 November with the final install sizes on every console.

Pre-load times and the steps to start the download are in our GTA 6 pre-order and pre-load guide, and the exact launch times are in our GTA 6 unlock time guide. Rockstar’s announcement is on the Rockstar Newswire.
